Tatsuya walked through the streets of Nikkousato, his smooth black hair was tied back in a tail that went down past his shoulders and he wore his usual attire a black suit jacket and dress pants over a white button-up shirt with the first few buttons undone, black leather gloves on his hands, the right one bearing the seal to store his puppet, steel-toed shoes, and a patch over his left eye. He was armed, of course, but preferred to keep such things hidden until they were needed. He had just come out from inside of a bar, it was a little early for the hard stuff, Tatsuya had just been smoking some locals in darts which he was better at than you’d expect a person with no depth perception to be. As he walked he saw several flares being shot up into the sky from some distance away from the village, these were signals that people used to communicate over long distances in the case of an emergency. He thought, “Damn, sucks to be anyone caught up in that.” And was about to walk away to continue his day of doing whatever he wanted when he heard someone calling for him specifically. He considered just pretending he hadn’t heard it but then sighed, defeated, “I deserved that.”He turned around and made tracks toward the source of the voice calling for him. “Yeah, yeah, cram it already! Tatsuya, that’s me, what’s goin’ on?” The messenger explained to him that there had been a mine collapse that had trapped several miners and they needed someone to go there and make sure they survived either by getting them supplies until they could be extracted or, preferably, getting them out immediately. Tatsuya packed his bags and made his way out to the mine. It wasn’t far, probably just a three-hour hike from the village, but it was across the desert sands which was never fun. He made sure to bring enough water with him and, other than some sweat, the journey to the mine was uneventful. Once he arrived, the rescue effort was already underway. Tatsuya was impressed with how they handled it, the tension in the air was palpable, but no one was panicking and running around, they were clearly professionals. The foreman saw him and approached, explaining the situation, “We’ve been digging a new shaft and it’s collapsed on six people, trapping them inside. It doesn’t have any other tunnels connecting to it so we have no way to get them out. We’re trying to dig them out but we have to be careful because there’s a danger of causing a second cave-in now that everything is unstable, but we don’t want to take too long because we have no idea what the miner’s condition is, for all we know there’s no airflow and they could start suffocating within the hour.” Tatsuya could tell the man was going to keep talking for a while so he cut him off, there was no time to lose, “Listen, I’ve got Earth Release techniques, I can get them out, show me where the collapse is.” He was thanked profusely and the foremen lead him to where the collapsed shaft was. The excavation was underway but as the foreman had already explained it was slow going. They were trying to move the rocks by hand or by pick out of the collapsed tunnel but they had to take their time and be careful because they didn’t want to cause another cave-in and further trap or even kill the miners. He asked for a map of the tunnel and was provided one. They were lucky since the tunnel was relatively new it didn’t continue very far and was basically just a straight line that extended 50 meters back into the rock. Tatsuya laid out his plan. He could use Earth techniques to instantly create tunnels through the rock and that could easily be used to extract the trapped miners. He asked the foreman what would be the safest way to do so. The tunnels he made were automatically stable but that didn’t mean that connecting them to the existing tunnel in the wrong way couldn’t cause that one to collapse. The foreman told him the safest possible way would be to loop a tunnel from a distance away to the rear of the current tunnel where everything would be the most stable. Tatsuya didn’t know shit about mining and assumed you had to know what you were talking about to become the foreman of a mining company and seceded to the man’s knowledge. It took a little while and a decent amount of chakra to do, Tatsuya could only make a 15-meter long tunnel per usage of the jutsu, and it was over 100 meters away from the other tunnel, but it still only took about 5 minutes, significantly faster than any of the non-chakra assisted methods would have taken. They could have blasted in with dynamite and that would have been faster, he supposed, but that was almost certain to collapse the tunnel and kill the trapped miners so it was obviously not on the table. Tatsuya looped his tunnel around to the rear of the collapsed one, basically making a big capital letter “U” in the rock. The foreman was right and the tunnel was sturdy. Tatsuya called for medics and they and he pulled the miners out. They weren’t unharmed, no one was that lucky he supposed, but they would all live. Tatsuya left the medical care to people who knew what they were doing and made his way back to the village, he needed a drink.
