Personality: Kanon is, in a word, complicated. One moment, you may see in her a seductive vixen who has no issue toying with others and wrapping people around her finger to get what she wants, but the next moment may reveal a staunch idealist who is very much concerned with the people around her and wishes to bring about positive change to the world. This conflict between her deceptive methods and her emotional nature forms the core foundations of who she is as a person.
Due to the environment in which she grew up, Kanon doesn't have the same inhibitions other people would have. Almost no topic is too taboo for her to talk about, and her inquisitive mind combined with her rebellious nature can make her seek out knowledge others consider forbidden. This, combined with her magnetic charm and charisma, make her a shrewd individual. She is capable of sussing out the intents of others by asking the right questions, reading body language, and making them nervous. All were techniques she learned from the women she lived with.
Of course, she respects people's boundaries. Though she is an incredibly liberal person, she isn't one to make others uncomfortable. She will stay her tongue around polite company, warming people to her presence and making sure they're the types who would appreciate her attitude. The only exception to this is her state of dress. If they don't like it, too bad!
This aptitude for all things social stems from an incredible empathy. When others feel pain, she feels it with them, and she can't help but want to help and comfort them in any way she can. She believes everyone is deserving of help; even criminals. Having been in the position of starving, homeless orphan, she knows firsthand what it's like to be in a disadvantageous position, and doesn't believe these people should be cast aside.
This, however, is not obvious from first impressions. Indeed, she will usually strike others as a fun-loving vixen. An eccentric woman who is only really concerned about how to have fun, caring not for what lies she concocts and what deception she engages in. This is not entirely untrue, as she very much enjoys chasing the next new thing, and making others fall for her. However, this does not scratch the surface of who she is.
Unfortunately for her, all these qualities have a damper put on them by virtue of her temper. An annoyed Kanon is a snarky bitch, especially when she has nothing to lose. She hates nothing more than people thinking she's a pushover and will put her foot down with force if anyone ever tries to walk over her. No one can keep her down; not that idiot who thought he could pay her for services, nor that jounin who sees fit to abuse his authority. She has her own beliefs, her own ambitions, and her own desires, and nothing will stop her from seeing them through. She is not afraid of fighting to the bitter end for them and isn't afraid of swinging around her kanabō if it comes down to it.
But to every rule, there's an exception. Kanon is an emotional soul; a woman that can't help but act with her heart even when she knows that she's acting irrationally. She is the unfortunate bearer of abandonment issues stemming from her early childhood, and though she isn't wont to let people past her elusive outer shell and into her sensitive inner self, she values them immensely once she does consider them a friend. To the point where the thought of them leaving her life causes significant distress in Kanon. As such, when caught between choosing her friends or her goals, she can very easily crash and burn due to the emotional stress she undergoes.
These two sides of her are constantly at odds with each other, and it's cause for a lot of complicated feelings within her. Still, she isn't a bad person... most of the time. This young woman still has much to learn, however.
Likes:
- Indulgences - Though she doesn't bear addictive personality by any means, she partakes in all sorts of vices. From alcohol to smoking to gambling, there's nothing she hasn't at least experienced. Even something as simple as good food is something she indulges fully in.
- The Arts - An emotional soul, Kanon adores the arts. She herself is proficient with quite a few musical instruments and is also an excellent dancer and singer.
- Fighting - The high of a good fight is almost addictive to Kanon. Though not the most violent of people, she finds that no vice she has can reach generate the same level of dopamine as a long, proper battle.
Dislikes:
- Judgemental People - Kanon despises these sorts. Those who believe they're better than others based on some arbitrary value are the lowest of the low in her eyes, and she makes her views on this quite clear. They don't deserve the decency of politeness, and may Kami help them if they dare insult her mother.
- Large Gatherings - Though her tendencies and general personality may indicate otherwise, Kanon dislikes parties and festivals. The atmosphere is too loud and claustrophobic, and she feels the need to escape from it and into a calmer environment.
- Boredom - Her love of new things is born from an intense dislike of monotony. Kanon hates it when things fall into a samey routine, and will always seek something new and exciting to do. Life is too short to spend it doing the same thing all day, after all.
History: “I know nothing about my parents. Nothing except for what I was told. That they were evil and vile; people best forgotten. Even their names are not allowed to be spoken, for they could concoct imagery that no one would wish to think of.
This is perhaps why my body is warped the way it is, why I grew up a lonely child in an orphanage, and why the older shinobi look at me with distrust clear as day in their eyes. Those not in the know simply see me as an anomaly, a cursed child meant to be hated. A scapegoat for their negative emotions.
That’s how the orphanage ladies treated me, anyway. Never did they hit me, but they did everything in their power to make life miserable. I learned from an early age that I had to fend for myself in a cruel environment. And I was quite good at it if I say so myself. My physiology granted quite the boon to strength and endurance from an early age, and the other kids learned not to mess with me physically.
So they messed with my psychologically. I was excluded from everything, loneliness my only companion. I tired of this, so I eventually ran. I made no memory worth speaking of at the orphanage.
Fending for myself at the orphanage proved a valuable experience for my transition into a street urchin. No kid could step over me, and I frequently butted my way into something some scrawny kid more nimble than I stole. Still, I was just as lonely as I was in the orphanage. I hated it… I even considered trying to end it.
But I was saved. Kids in the same position as I reached out to me, got to know me. I came to cherish them very quickly, perhaps because my heart was crying out for friends. For the first time in forever, I smiled… but the life of a street urchin is still hard. Doubly so when you didn’t bear the strength I did. The others in my group rarely fared as well as I, and some…
There was this one kid. I always thought he was weird, but I was probably the closest to him out of everyone in the group. He was the first one who dreamt of a better future where we wouldn’t have to forever look for scraps while evading the adults who mistreated us. He was an optimist, a boy who smiled when times were tough… someone who gave me hope. Hehe… I admit I had something of a crush on him for a while.
One day, I found myself in the red light district. Most adults were drunk and easy to steal from there… but I was caught. After all, all thieves get caught one day, no? I remember looking at the lady who caught me red-handed and thinking she was the prettiest woman in the world. She didn’t look at me with disgust and instead took me in. I very quickly got to know adults who didn’t scorn me, pretty ladies who taught me how to socialise and be girly.
The woman who had taken me in was the owner of a brothel… and the greatest person I’ve ever met. I will always be grateful to her for what she did for me; she’s my mother, as far as I’m concerned. She even calls me Kanonball… heh, I love that nickname, even if I’d never in a million years admit that to her.
Still, a woman such as her is busy. I sometimes didn’t get attention when I wanted it, but the other ladies gave me that well enough. They also taught me their… techniques, when I was old enough, much to mother’s dismay. Before long, I knew how to charm my way into advantageous positions, how to interact and get people wrapped around your finger. And oh, how I loved doing that! Getting men to dance to my tune was downright euphoric!
But I wanted more. I felt that I could achieve more in life, and so eventually turned to the life of a shinobi. My mother resisted at first but eventually relented. She saw I was thinking beyond just fighting, I had a dream I wanted to achieve. I had inherited my friend’s will, his desire for a better world.
For someone like me, being a shinobi is the best way I can achieve this.”
