Paper and the Mutt... (Group Mission)

Mission Details:

There was always a feeling that was both equal parts beautiful and terrifying about the vast expanse of canyons and cliffs that existed in the area. It always made the man wonder if there had been an earthquake or some event that had this happen all at once or... Was it just a normal occurrence that happened over time? It wasn't like he'd be able to get his answers by asking the rocks, nor was there anyone in the village old enough to remember the answer to that question. Sojiro Sakura let out a sigh at that, sometimes there was nothing worse than not being able to satisfy your curiosity. The raven-black haired man would rub the bridge of his nose while resting in a crouched position, letting his ruby hues return to scanning the area a moment later. The color of his eyes accented by the thick lines underneath his eyes; his clan birthmark. He had shown up for the mission about twenty minutes early, to make sure he had time to snack on some food and relax. Though, that had only lasted about ten minutes before he was just sitting around and waiting for his teammate.

Sojiro Sakura wore a pair of black pants that stretch to halfway down his calves before stopping, not meeting any bandages or shoes on his feet. He wore a Flak Jacket of the same color, completely open in the front to expose the man's tanned and toned body that rested beneath it. Resting on the back of his Flak Jacket and the metal plate upon his head was the famous Sun Symbol. A red bandana kept his hair out of his eyes, as well as keeping the metal plate in place, being the cloth it was attached to. When it came to weaponry, save for his shinobi pouch, the only open weapon that he wore was a windmill shuriken that hung from his side. On his left arm was a leather gauntlet that contained a hidden compartment with various poisons and the likes in it.

The mission they had been given was easy enough, just check the area for any squatters or bandits, then report it back to the village. There had supposedly been reports of smoke and old campsites in the area, though it wasn't exactly anything new to the area. This was just the village's routine check into it all. He had been assigned this mission with some woman called Kannagi Irezumi, someone he had never heard of but supposedly they were from the same village. That was interesting. And, before he could even see anyone, there was suddenly a smell that didn't blend well with the musk of outside. Herbs... Spices...? Was that ginger? Ginger and shit?... Or was that a horse?

Kannagi Irezumi prided herself on always being on time. She was a perfectionist about nearly everything she did. Her tight sleeveless shirt was the color white, her tight shorts, black, and around her waist was her pale blue coat in the case of sudden change in weather. She felt the wind in her short blue hair as she galloped away from the village main and into the Infinite Canyons. She knew the canyons were rough for travel but the pony she rode was unique in that it was the same horse she had cared for from her life with the Irezumi family. It was the same horse she had left them with. Cirilla was a nearly 6 year old mount with gray and white marbled coat. She had been bred and trained for survival in the desert and for arduous trekking. Her mane was dark but knotted through a waterfall cascading braid to keep it from tangling in Cirilla's dark eyes.

Packed with several containers of water, first aid materials, and two days worth of fruit and bread, Cirilla led her rider out to the canyons to meet the shinobi she had been paired with for the mission. Kannagi slowed the pony down and climbed off her back, leading her gently with a single hand on the horse's neck to stand near the shinobi standing there. He was carrying a large shuriken and had dark lines under his eyes. Kannagi pursed her lips but couldn't seem to place where the male could have been from. "I presume you are Sojiro Sakura. My name is Kannagi and this is Cirilla." The blue haired woman gave him a courteous albeit casual bow and inclined her head. She was 5'11', fairly tall for a female, and her pale skin was quite strange in the desert as well compared to others.

"There were rumors of smoke from the old campsites in the area. Assuming they aren't abandoned, we should go in prepared." She swallowed as she looked him over, surprise flashing over her visage at the sight of his bare feet and bare chest. She felt suspicious that this nin might not be taking the job as seriously as she was, but had he been incompetent or drunk, this man would not have shown up so early for their meeting either. Kannagi temporarily decided to postpone her judgement and questioned with the voice of a schoolteacher, "Are you prepared?"

As the woman had ridden up on her horse, Sojiro had taken that moment to slowly turn towards the female and regard her details. It really was a horse... Weird. The man would move from his crouched position, standing roughly around 5'10" himself and the fact that his eyes had to shift just slightly to look at the woman... Was also weird. What did this girl grow up eating? People? His brows furrowed a little bit, he knew that wasn't actually a possible reason for her height, most likely just genetic... But Shinobi had been capable of weirder things. The slouched shinobi would turn his back towards the woman again, instead, looking out onto the canyons again, "You've found your man. Good to meetcha, Kannagi-san." He spoke casually to the woman while looking out, the female able to hear his nose making soft sniffing sounds.

"I think we still have some ground left to cover, I don't smell any smoke or people, even. Not yet, at least." He didn't really take the time to explain how or why it never really was at the forefront of his mind to explain it. He'd start to stretch his legs a little bit as he turned his attention back to the woman, looking at her, then passed her at the horse, "Yeah I'm prepared, don'tcha think you're a little... Overprepared?" The tone of his voice wasn't something that made him come off as rude, it was clear he was genuinely curious. Though, a moment later, Sojiro would shrug regardless, "At least you brought something to ride, it means you won't slow me down." After he was done stretching, Sojiro would walk off towards the northern part of the earth, a piece of land not too far in front of him. He was confident he could make the jump, turning towards Kannagi for the final time, thumb gesturing in the direction, "You two good to go this way?"

As Sojiro sniffed around, moving from crouch to slouch, Kannagi pursed her lips in observance. Whatever he was doing, she clearly managed to pass his test. He spoke with a strange casual tone, like a street child, and it made her pity whatever lack of education he had. Still, competent enough to fight like a genin would be plenty on a routine mission like this. Kannagi had no doubt of his capability in that department. "Overprepared just means you can't be surprised or ambushed as easily. My horse can handle this all fine," the blue eyed woman chuckled.

"The thought that without my horse I would slow you down amuses me given that Cirilla is a one of a kind species. She could beat you without using chakra, and quite possibly with it too." Kannagi approached the ledge and backed Cirilla up. She muttered something softly to the pony and the gray mare took flight, launching forward in a dash and jump that would be the envy of any gymnast. But Cirilla didn't stop there. The mount pursued the path of large pillars of earth, boulders and edges of land until she made it to the other side of the crevasse. The goal was to show off a little, but Kannagi's knowledge of what was polite kept her from overdoing it. The smoke was a wrinkle in the sky and in a terrain like this it would be hard for the average shinobi to be able to tell the distance. Kannagi straightened her riding posture and spoke without looking to her partner; she assumed her had made his way across regardless, "Could take an hour if I run Cirilla hard. I would prefer to take it easy and make it there in two, sustaining her energy for an emergency. What is your opinion?"

Sojiro would listen to the woman as she responded, then watched as she climbed back into her horse and would begin to speak about her horse outrunning him. The man would give a slight nod of his head to this, watching as the horse backed up and then took off with a graceful leap onto the earthen terrain that was in front of them. The man had watched up until Cirilla had prepared to jump, then bending his own knees and launching himself forward to hit the ground and run alongside the horse. What Kannagi witnessed next would definitely be odd but the male Shinobi had moved onto all fours and was easily keeping pace with the horse as they moved along the terrain, the roughness of the area posing no problems for him to move through the area.

"Cute, you think she could outrun me." Sojiro moved like a gracious beast himself on the ground, his muscles tensing and releasing with years of practice, coming to him as easy as breathing. He saw the smoke in the distance, just barely, but he didn't pay much attention to it. Once the smoke was in the range of his nose, he'd be able to take them there directly, until then he just needed to move in the correct direction. As she spoke about how long it would take there, he'd let out a soft grunt, "I thought you said she wasn't going to slow me down?" He asked while looking up at her with a perked brow, the terrain tilting upwards as they moved and coming to another edge/leap to another piece.

The man would launch into the air and perform a flip, his legs ending up in the air as he crossed his arms. He would be floating next to Kannagi at the climax of their jump, "Two hours seems fine, let me know if you need to take any breaks, too." He would say, which was meant to be playful but there was no tone saying so in his voice. When it came to being social, Sojiro usually fell flat on his face. As they came to the ground, it was more than easy enough for the man to roll onto his feet and back into a four-limbed sprint.

"Have we been introduced?" Kannagi wondered aloud. The man joked with her like an old friend. He reminded her of something from her past. Racing with the boys, fighting with sticks, riding horses through homemade obstacle courses on hot afternoons before dinner. Kannagi could remember it so easily, a bead of sweat down her child's self's face. The bright sun growing dimmer, turning red as it set on the sandy horizon. The other children were all boys: Akio, Daizen, Goro, Joji, and Kai. The sons of the men in her immediate family group. They taunted and teased, pulling at her hair and her dress. She had been caught watching them and instead of being tattled on, they invited her to join them. Kannagi had stripped off her skirt to just the shorts underneath and took a bended knee pose. She challenged Daizen, the clear leader, and lost. The boys had formed a ring around her, laughing and mocking. Strangely, she felt the surge now as she had then; Kannagi's mind was overwhelmed with motivation and drive to succeed and nothing more.

Her lips pursed together in a tight line. "I could triumph over you on my own any time. And Cirilla is more than capable of leaving you in the dust." Kannagi shrugged her shoulders and looked down at her pony, sternly centering herself and her emotions. "But this is a mission, is it not? Our competitiveness should not put the mission's success at risk and I won't force Cirilla to endure your teasing unto exhaustion for mere sport." Her eyes narrowed then and she brought those blue orbs onto the man's own gaze, a devilish expression there. "On the way back though, we shan't hold back."

With the cocky titter of someone with royal blood, Kannagi lifted her head high and she rode elegantly at an average speed ahead and towards the smoke in the distance. She had made a good retort, she thought, ensuring that her focus was on the mission and she could act as a professional. Still, she would be able to fight for her dignity and uphold Cirilla's honor when it was complete. Best of both worlds and Sojiro wouldn't know what hit him. The man was far more haughty than she and Kannagi knew those who were overconfident were bound to make a mistake, enjoying their bits and bites instead of concentrating on the task at hand.

There was a fierce, boisterous laugh that would leave Sojiro as he moved gracefully across the ground with ease, "You know, some would say the fact that you can't prove your point while on a mission... Would prove my point~" He had decided to banter back with the woman a bit, "But, I'll take you up on that offer, regardless!" And with that, the two of them would continue to cross along the canyons in silence, unless Kannagi initiated a conversation. Sojiro didn't have much skill in personal conversation or pointless talking but he wouldn't deny someone else that, he knew how people could be while trying to bond with the people on missions.

Assuming things had gone smoothly, the two would travel for the better part of an hour, Sojiro not really showing any signs of tiring as he moved. At this point, Sojiro would start to adjust his path and start to stray away from Kannagi. "Oi, I've got something." He would say to the woman, his nose picking up the smell of a fire somewhere in the distance. Sojiro would turn to his left and right while they ran for the next hour, following his nose until they would eventually come to a large cliffside of sorts. It overlooked a small opening that was covered by nearly five other smaller cliffs, almost impossible to find if someone didn't have the highest ground possible.

There was definitely a camp set up down there, Sojiro finally stopping his run and moving into a crouch as he would watch them from afar, "There they are... I'm getting... Six people, total." From where they were standing, it was hard for their eyes to exactly count the number of people that were below them. Sojiro was relying on his nose to count the different scents, slowly nodding his head a little bit, "There's only six of them..." He would rib his chin a little bit, pulling out a small pad and pen so that he could mark down the location of the sight, "So, you want to go and capture them? Maybe scare them away?" That hadn't been the mission they were given but Sojiro was bored, plus, he doubted the village would give him much shit for just saving them the time. Hell, with his luck, he'd be given the second mission to dispatch these same people! "Or, are you too scared?"

Kannagi rode along in what seemed to be unapologetic mutual silence. After only a few minutes, she was relaxed and focused on the mission once more. The wind created by her ride ruffled Cirilla's braided mane and steered Kannagi's blue hair away from her face. A few times Kannagi closed her eyes and let Cirilla drive, resting her blue orbs from the sting of sand and sun. When Sojiro called out a change in direction, Kannagi followed him on faith. She was assured that he was a genin and wouldn't mislead them or bungle the over all mission based on his honor as a shinobi.

Kannagi slowed her pony and held the reins in order to calm Cirilla into a still position. Kannagi made out the barely noticeable camp of bandits and nodded to herself, impressed by his count. "You can see them? Where?" She squinted and gave up turning to Sojiro. Kannagi crossed her arms, looked down at him and informed, "The mission isn't to go after them ourselves. We wouldn't be following orders." Still, Kannagi considered the number 6 to be insignificant with two shinobi, provided the bandits weren't also jutsu users. When he asked if she was too scared, her look sharpened like that of a blade. Kannagi leapt off her horse and patted Cirilla, obtaining a thick carrot from her pack and breaking it between her hands. "I can ride better than a man, think better than a man," the blue eyed woman fed one of the carrot pieces to the pony and left the others on the ground in the shade of a rocky pillar.

The shinobi approached him with disgust in her tone, "You ask if I am afraid because I choose not to dishonor the orders we were given, in order to goad me into making a mistake that would cost me my shinobi career." The anger in her accusation was raw, stemming from a pain in her past. Her scowl grew deeper and her voice more silent. "I'll take you up on this idea. It will be fun to prove to you my talents and my worth as a partner. We will be capturing them, lest they run and make a new camp to continue their cruel misdeeds." She pointed her index finger at Sojiro's face, just a few inches away. "We do this safely, we do this right. And if it costs me my forehead protector, then I will make sure it costs you your legs. Are we clear?" Her tone was deadlier than she had ever used, only to drive home the point that this mission was to be completed with perfection.

Disobeying orders as a Sun shinobi was dishonorable and it made her sick inside to consider the weight of that fact. Still, it was modestly possible that those above their level might be impressed and bestow upon her further honor and tougher missions. Her stony expression relaxed after her warning and she moved to the cliff's edge without even slight concern for her partner. Her voice was light and friendly again, though no doubt still confident. "Are you ready, or are you too scared... of me?" There was a little impish smile there but the promise in her blue eyes from the warning still lingered.

Sojiro had turned to face the woman as she asked him about how he was able to see them, "See them, no. I can smell them." But he wouldn't really get a chance to explain further because, instead, Kannagi seemed to start going off on a tangent. She would start speaking about riding and men, which confused him a little bit, why would she just change the subject like that? He wasn't oblivious to the tones in her voice as she began to approach him, causing his brows to furrow and his teeth to press together a bit. He would fully straighten out his back as she approached, allowing him to stand at his full height of 6'1" and look down at the woman. As she raised a finger towards his face, his right hand would move with ease and slap the appendage out of his face. His teeth were shown as a bestial type of snarl came from the back of his throat, "You listen here, Kannagi, you can take whatever stick is up your ass and choke on it." He spoke firmly, his eyes meeting hers firmly.

"You can 'Ride better than a man?' and Think better than a man? Good, then why don't you prove it and stop letting your ego get hurt by strangers." He looked down at her, but it wasn't because he thought less of her, it was because she was annoying him right now. He would raise his own finger to poke Kannagi in her chest but it wasn't the same type of angry waggling she had been doing moments before, "You get something through your head, Kannagi Irezumi. I don't give a flying fuck who you are or what you claim to be. Man, woman, animal! It doesn't matter because you will still be eating my dust. Because that is who I am, and the confidence in my own skills. Not everything has to do with you." The anger that had bubbled in him had subsided mostly, he was confident in his skills not to let her get underneath his skin. Sojiro would turn his back to the woman and walk towards the cliff again.

"Oh, we're clear, but we aren't doing this your way. I asked if you were scared to make sure you wouldn't hold me back because that'd be a pain in my ass." He would look over his shoulder at Kannagi with an arrogant smirk on his lips, "I like your gumption, lady... But threaten me again like that, and no amount of hiding behind your forehead protector will save you." And there was no anger or malice in that, he was simply stating a fact, at least to himself. With that, he'd turn his attention away from the woman and start running towards the edge full sprint. He would send himself flying forward and off into the abyss of the canyons beneath!

Kannagi hadn't heard of a man who could smell people from this distance but it was clearly an extraordinary ability. The woman didn't speak about it but her judgement of him raised much higher; she didn't doubt that he was a good shinobi or that he would become one then. Sojiro's words at first made her anger even brighter, blue little flames in her blue eyes dancing and waiting for a second to attack. But the more she listened, the less the burned. He wasn't being a sexist, he was just an overconfident, arrogant man. It wasn't about her at all. She felt her animosity dissipate and in its place a weight like she ate a sack of clay bricks. Her face looked uncomfortable and unsettled as Sojiro addressed her threat.

He ran and leapt off the edge of the cliff and Kannagi took a deep breath. "This time, I'm the fool." After just a few more seconds of self-beration, Kannagi made a few hand-seals. At the edge where they had stood, she transformed into a two dimensional paper version of herself using the Paper Doll technique. She let her body fall off the cliff-side and sway back and forth, floating down in the wake of Sojiro's fall. The air that followed him worked like a vaccuum and brought her right up behind him as he landed on the rock shelf in front of the bandits' hiding place.

She transformed herself back into normal and stood beside the cave opening, "No guards posted. Suppose that they assumed nobody would discover this place. How would you like to handle this to ensure we arrest the entire group. Not to mention, Sojiro, did you have a plan to bring them back to Nikkousato with us?" Kannagi acted as if nothing in the least had happened, treating him with all the respect of a shinobi partner despite how much of a show off he was.

Sojiro would nod his head a bit at her questions, "Easy, I plan on dragging them back. If they don't have a cart or something, I'll carry them. I'm sure you and your horse could take one or two with you." He would nod his head at that, moving a bit closer to the cave exit that the smoke seemed to come from. He moved close towards the ground, crouching down a bit and letting his nose twitch a few times as they did, "Damn, whatever they're cooking smells amazing." Of course, all Kannagi would be able to smell if she tried was the smell of smoke, perhaps the campfire itself.

"Alright, I don't know what your skills are but... We're going to get a headcount, and I'll go down to lead the assault. I'll trust you to pick them off with their eyes on me." Sojiro spoke confidently and firmly, without a trace of any doubts in his actions, words, or even what she was capable of. As he would stay crouched down, moving deeper into the cave, it eventually opened up into a larger room. There was a small fire going, with four people sitting around it, seemingly chatting about nothing important while waiting for the food to finish. There was one person off to the side, laying on their side on a bedroll and writing in some book. There was no sixth person visible but Sojiro didn't trust that, there was still a small tent in one corner that he couldn't see inside.

The two of them had entered along a ridge that overlooked the room, one side wrapping around the room while the other led into a slope that led into the camp below. After taking in all the details present, Sojiro would look at Kannagi and give her a thumbs-up, slowly rolling his shoulders before he would start to walk down the slope and towards the group, "I'm sure you've heard the whole spiel before... But, you can come with me peacefully, this doesn't need to get out of hand." And, of course, he suddenly speaking had caused the people in the room to jump. They seemed to look at each other, thinking about their options and seemingly thinking they could take on the one man. So, they would start to grab their weapons!

Kannagi waited five seconds until after he vanished into the hideout before trailing Sojiro's steps. She walked as quietly as she could manage, hearing his proclamation from ahead. With the thumbs up she had caught the sight of, Kannagi gave him a patient head start, following his plan. When the people inside started gathering weapons, Kannagi lowered herself to the ground, laying on her stomach and crawling up the hidden ridge above the camp within. She aimed her senbon launcher carefully at the man who had been resting on the floor, shooting two senbon for his face. One struck him in the forehead, the other pierced his right eye. With a howl of pain the bandit stumbled backwards and fell on his rear, essentially taking his position back where he had started.

Kannagi caught the eye of one of the men from around the fire as well as lifted a set of throwing knives and aimed them at her. The blue haired woman was all about stealth and acting with caution, but when it wasn't an option, she knew sometimes her enemies just needed to be dealt with quickly. She ducked her head until her chin touched the rock floor. Two knives zipped over her head, missing but not as she noted for a lack of trying. A third knife clattered off the rock ledge by her nose and still she did not flinch, trusting that her hiding place was well chosen. Kannagi had indeed picked a well angled perch for hiding and protecting. She slid a kunai out of her pouch and used two fingers to slide an explosive tag to it as well. Kannagi launched the weapon towards the far end of the cave behind the tent, hoping to injure others within range while not harming Sojiro. She just had to hope Sojiro was smart enough to either see it or fast enough to avoid it. Her goal wasn't to kill of course.

As they had started to reach for their weapons, Sojiro had trusted that Kannagi had already entered the cave and made her move. This was only confirmed when there was a sudden scream from a man in the back, clutching his face and falling onto his ass while he did. One of the four people around the campfire turned and started throwing weapons towards Kannagi, which meant that the other three people were going to be for Sojiro. He was more than alright with that, the three of them seemingly having nothing more than some basic katana. Sojiro would dash forward towards the male on his right, easily ducking underneath the sweep of his blade and bringing his right hand upwards to connect with his jawline. There was a released concentration of chakra as he struck, sending the person a few feet off the ground and easily knocking them out. [Cherry Blossom Impact]

He would twist his body in time just to barely avoid the second sword that would come towards him, sliding to the side with ease and smirking as he did. As he moved to the side, it was easy for him to see the kunai that Kannagi had thrown and he would aim a swift kick into the ribs, sending the bandit tumbling towards the tent. As he did, the sixth person had started to emerge from the tent and the two would collide, Kannagi's explosion coming a moment later and sending both bandits across the room. Sojiro would have left his back exposed to the third person from before but, he would have left this person and the other to Kannagi... Otherwise, he'd probably end up with a sword in his back.

Kannagi observed from her stomach across the room as only two remaining fighters fought against Sojiro. She was unhappy with only two being taken out by her explosive tag. From her height and with the cloud of smoke swirling down in the cavernous area below, Sojiro was relying on her to do her part. She had no choice but turn to unconventional methods, tactics she was not as good as using. Kannagi leapt to her feet, backed up and then ran to fling herself off the edge. With her combination of paper and wind affinities, she was able to slow herself down ever so slightly to peer into the rivulets of smoke before landing. She braced her feet as she landed behind the bandit attacking Sojiro with a sword.

Kannagi drew out her kunai and stepped close and quick to the bandit with a light two-step. She stepped her right foot over his right foot and wrapped her right arm in a hook around the man's neck. Kannagi's left hand held a kunai and pointed it up underneath his broad chin. "Enough!" She shouted firmly. "I have your leader. I was watching you. Ring on your index finger. Only guy with a sword. Call off your people, now." His sword never managed to complete its arc. He lowered his arm and tossed his sword to the ground. The bandit smelled like body odor and she wrinkled her nose, holding him tight regardless. "Guess you got me there. Lay down your arms men, it's over." She heard the sound of the final bandit plopping himself down and letting out a growl of defeat. Kannagi held Sojiro's attacker firmly still, squinting through the fog towards Sojiro's likely shadowy figure.

"We're good to go. Wrap them up and we can return with them." There was a moment of relaxed silence while she waited for his reply. Beneath the smoke crawled a formidable and angry opponent: the man with the senbon through his eye. He had jerked out the senbon and in his anger was able to fight through the pain as he advanced dangerously toward Kannagi.

Sojiro had casually turned around as Kannagi had held up the leader of the bandits, a grin on his lips as he would look passed the man and directly at the woman, "Good job, I was worried for a moment." And, with that, he would take some wire out of his pockets and hand some of it to the bandit leader, then toss some to the other men, "Alright dicks, start typing up your friends' hands, then yourselves. Anyone who is able, grab an unconscious friend and help me out here." He would command even to the bandits, watching as a man started to shuffle towards Kannagi while holding his eye.

Sojiro moved quickly, standing between the man and Kannagi, before moving out to strike the man. Sojiro grabbed the man's wrist, twisting it until it was pressed against his back and he was almost on his knees. With a free hand, Sojiro would raise a hand to the injury on his eye and heal it with a basic healing jutsu. He'd let the man go afterward, Bandit stunned at the fact that he could see and no longer in pain... Until Sojiro would strike him in the face and knock him out cold, tossing him over to the other bandits, "And that's what you get for not standing down."

The black-haired man would roll his shoulders, about ten minutes later, he and Kannagi sliding from the cavern and up a walkway that led to the top of the cliffs from before. Three mean were unconscious, the other three carrying a friend as Sojiro would usher them along. He'd grunt a bit while looking at Kannagi, "Well, go and get your horse. We may have to put our race on hold for a bit."
