Before too long, the hyenas had apparently encircled the trio and so, Faustein fell into line with Kannagi and Ami, forming the roughly triangular battle formation wherein each of the three had their back to the other two such that each was covering one direction. Then, the battle began with Kannagi leading off by counterattacking two of the six hyenas which had charged at her. From what Faustein could deduce by observing her in action, she was probly a wind release user, given that she had fired off a series of wind blades or vaccum blades at the beasts. Luckily, these blades made quick work of the hyenas as they ripped and shredded them to death.
How intriguing indeed, wind users are said to be rare among the elemental types, so this is a true treat.
Then, as Faustein watched, it was apparently Ami's turn next to be attacked and to counterattack in turn. She too finished off the two hyenas that attacked her with a swift combination of sword slashes and shuriken throws guided of course by her bloodline trait, the far-famed Byakugan. Hence, there were the last two of the six total hyenas remaining and these two seemed to hesitate, as if they had been intimidated by the swift, and rather violent deaths of the rest of their pack at the hands of Faustein's two kunoichi mission partners.
Now this is truly irksome indeed. Why must these two be so cowardly? Then again, maybe they have lost their nerve upon seeing the deaths of their packmates. Oh well, it is only natural, perhaps, as it is the logical thing to do in this type of situation. In thaat case, a smoke bomb should be able to smoke them out and herd them towards me. Once they do, it would perhaps be possible for me to use their momentum against them by simply holding my katana outward.
Faustein mused silently as he observed the last two hyenas hiding some paces away from him. After a few moments of devising the plan, he took out a smoke bomb from his ninja gear pouch and hurled it at the spot where he could discern the two hyenas as they hid from him and his colleagues. Upon impact, the smole bomb released a thick cloud of smoke which irritated the sensitive noses of the hyenas and sent them dashing towards him, naturally in an attempt to escape the burgeoning smoke cloud.
Phase 1, complete. Phase 2 commencing operation
Faustein thought with a smirk as he unsheathed the katana and drew it from out of his white lab coat. Then, he extended it forward while taking a bracing stance to steady the weapon in anticipation of the incoming impact. The first of the two hyenas came charging at him while flailing its head about this way and that. Consequently, it could not dodge the katana's razor sharp blade and thus, slammed into it headlong with a sickening thud. The katana blade was thus driven deep into the beast's head and pierced through the entirety of its head before exiting out the back, killing the unfortunate beast instantly. Whilst this was happening, his face contorted into a rather disturbing deranged grin and he even uttered a brief mad, sadistic chuckle during this process as if reveling in the carnage all around him. However, since he knew the second was on its way, he calmed down and wasted no time in drawing his katana out of the first hyena's corpse and swinging it to the side sharply to clean off the blood from it.
One threat neutralized, one more remaining.
Faustein thought silently and he spun to the side to first avoid the initial charge of the last hyena and then on the return curve of the spin, he used the rotational momentum to power his thrusting attack aimed at the beast's brainstem, or more specifically where the base of the hyena's head met the initial portion of its neck. Sure enough, his attack against it struck true, plunging the cold steel blade of his katana deep into its neck and severing the connection between its brain and its spinal cord in mere moments, killing it as well. Here, once again, that same deranged grin and sadistic chuckle overtook his face and voice, but as before, it too was quite brief in duration. After it passed, he returned to normal again, with his impassive expression. Then, as he came to a halt, Faustein pulled out katana from the second hyena's corpse which caused it to slump to the ground a few paces away from its companion which was also dead, cleaned off the blood by swinging the blade down and to the side, and then sheathed it once more, in one smooth, continuous motion. Sadly, despite how careful he had been to avoid staining his white coat, there was still some blood stains splashed over it from his own hyena encounter and killing. He sighed as he examined the stains, and then turned to Kannagi and Ami, remarking with the polite smile and impassive, inscrutable expression
"Well now, that was mildly entertaining. What say we return to collect the mission reward and then celebrate mission completion? Perhaps even at the village tavern?"
He suggested and then fell silent, wondering what the two young women would do or say in response to his suggestion.
